GM charging systems deliberately vary the voltage to save fuel, so a reading that moves up and down on the dash gauge is normal on its own. The Corvette and Camaro keep the battery away from the engine and should stay on a sealed type.

Most models have the battery in the engine bay. The exceptions matter: the Camaro from 2010 on carries it in the boot, several Traverse years have it under the cabin floor behind the front passenger seat, and the Corvette position changes by generation. Those cars have jump-start points under the bonnet. Coding is not normally required. Cars with a battery sensor relearn the new battery over a few drive cycles, and stop-start returns once charge is established.
