How Hyundai cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

Most petrol Hyundais use maintenance-free flooded (calcium) batteries. Models with Idle Stop and Go use AGM. Many have a battery sensor on the negative terminal that feeds the alternator management system. Some hybrids, the first Ioniq Hybrid among them, use a 12V lithium unit built into the hybrid pack, which is not a roadside replacement item.

Fitting and registration

Under the bonnet on nearly all models, with a base clamp or top bracket. The older rear-wheel-drive Genesis saloon keeps it in the boot. No registration tool is required on most cars; the sensor recalibrates on its own after the car has been left locked for a few hours.

Does my Hyundai need an AGM battery?

Only if it has Idle Stop and Go or came with AGM from the factory. The label on the existing battery says AGM if so. Cars without idle stop use a maintenance-free flooded battery. Send us a photo of the label and we match the technology and size.

Do you need to reset anything after a Hyundai battery change?

Usually not with a tool. On cars with a battery sensor, the system recalibrates after the car sits locked and undisturbed for a few hours, so idle stop may stay off until then. Windows with auto up may need resetting by holding the switch.

Can you replace the 12V battery on a Hyundai hybrid at the roadside?

It depends on the model. Hybrids with a conventional 12V battery can be done on site. Some, such as the first Ioniq Hybrid, use a 12V lithium unit inside the hybrid pack with a reset button on the dash. Try the reset first; a failed unit needs a workshop.

The battery light is on in my Hyundai. Should I replace the battery?

Not before testing. That light means the charging system is not keeping up, which is more often the alternator, its belt or a cable than the battery. Switch off what you can and stop somewhere safe. We test charging on site and tell you what has failed.
