Battery technology

Most of the range (Corolla, Camry, Yaris, Hilux, Land Cruiser, Prado) uses flooded or maintenance-free calcium batteries in Japanese JIS sizes. Models with stop-start need EFB or AGM. Hybrids such as the Prius and Camry Hybrid use a compact 12V auxiliary battery, usually AGM with a vent tube when it sits inside the cabin or boot.

Fitting and registration

On petrol and diesel Toyotas the battery is under the bonnet with a simple top clamp. On several hybrids the 12V battery is in the boot behind a side trim panel. No battery registration is needed. After the change, one-touch windows and the clock may need resetting, and the idle can take a short drive to settle.

  • Slow cranking after the car has sat in open parking through a hot afternoon.
  • Hybrid shows no READY light or a dark dash while the high-voltage pack is fine: the 12V auxiliary is the usual suspect.
  • White or green crust on the terminals of older Corolla, Yaris and Hilux batteries, which adds resistance and mimics a dead battery.
  • Small JIS batteries use thinner posts than the larger sizes, so a battery of the wrong terminal type will not clamp properly.

My Toyota hybrid will not start. Is it the big hybrid battery?

Often it is not. A hybrid needs its small 12V auxiliary battery to wake the computers and close the high-voltage relays. If that battery is flat, the dash stays dark or READY never appears. We test the 12V battery first, and jump-start or replace it on site if it has failed.

Does a Toyota need coding after a battery change?

No. Toyotas do not need battery registration. You may have to reset the one-touch window function and the clock, and the engine idle can feel slightly different for the first few kilometres while the computer relearns. Our technician checks charging voltage before leaving.

Can I fit a bigger battery in my Land Cruiser?

Only if it fits the tray and the clamp holds it firmly. A higher capacity battery in the same case size helps with winches, fridges and extra lights. An oversized battery that sits loose will be damaged by vibration, so we match the tray size first, then the capacity.

How long does a Toyota battery last in the UAE?

It depends on heat exposure and how the car is used. Batteries here generally last a shorter time than in cooler countries, and cars parked outdoors or driven only on short trips wear theirs faster. A yearly battery test before summer tells you where yours stands.
