How Tesla cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

Older cars use a conventional 12V lead-acid battery: Model S and Model X before the 2021 refresh, and Model 3 and Model Y built up to roughly late 2021. Later cars moved to a compact lithium-ion low-voltage battery that is a Tesla service part, and Cybertruck runs a 48V low-voltage system. We replace the 12V lead-acid type on site. For the lithium type we test, support the car so it can be opened and moved, and tell you plainly that the unit itself is a Tesla service job.

Fitting and registration

The battery sits in the front compartment, under the plastic cowl panels near the base of the windscreen. With a flat battery the front boot will not open from the screen, so on Model 3 and Model Y we feed a small external supply to the release wires behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper. The car must be powered down properly before the old battery comes out. No coding is needed on the lead-acid cars, and the screen alert normally clears once the new battery is seen.

  • A screen alert saying the 12V or low-voltage battery needs replacing soon. Treat it as days, not months.
  • Doors, windows and the charge port not responding, with a dark screen, while the main pack still has charge.
  • Repeated low-voltage warnings after long parking in the sun with Sentry Mode or Cabin Overheat Protection on.
  • A car that wakes with external support but shuts down again within hours points to a failed battery, not a one-off drain.

Can you replace a Tesla battery at the roadside?

We replace the 12V lead-acid battery found on older Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y cars where the car is parked. The lithium low-voltage battery on newer cars and the main traction pack are Tesla service work. We test first and tell you which one you have.

My Tesla is completely dead and the doors will not open. What can you do?

We support the low-voltage system from outside so the car wakes up, the doors and front boot open and the main pack can reconnect. Then we test the low-voltage battery. If it has failed it will go flat again, so it needs replacing rather than another boost.

How do I know if my Tesla has the 12V lead-acid or the lithium battery?

Build date is the quickest guide. Model 3 and Model Y built up to roughly late 2021, and Model S and Model X before the 2021 refresh, use lead-acid. Send us the model, year and a photo of the alert on the screen and we will confirm before dispatch.

Can a Tesla be jump-started like a petrol car?

Not in the same way. There is no starter motor to crank, so we use a controlled low-current supply to wake the electronics instead of a high-current boost. This only helps a flat low-voltage battery. If the main pack is empty, the car needs charging or a flatbed.
