Weak cooling is not always a gas problem. A failed condenser fan, a blocked cabin filter, a worn compressor clutch, a stuck blend flap or a faulty pressure sensor all produce the same complaint from the driving seat. AC repair starts with a proper diagnosis: pressures, vent temperature, fan operation and a scan of the climate control module.

Simple checks can be done where the car is parked. Repairs that mean opening the system, such as a compressor, condenser or evaporator, are done in a workshop where the gas can be recovered and the system vacuumed and refilled correctly. We explain what failed and what it needs before work begins.

Why is my AC not cold after a gas refill?

Either the gas has leaked out again or gas was never the problem. Common causes are a condenser fan that is not running, a weak compressor, a blocked condenser or a blend flap stuck on warm. A diagnosis finds which one before more gas is added.

Can AC repair be done at my location?

Checks and small jobs such as a cabin filter, a relay or a fan fault can often be done where the car is. Replacing a compressor, condenser or evaporator is workshop work, because the gas has to be recovered and the system vacuumed afterwards.

What causes the bad smell from the vents?

Usually moisture and bacteria on the evaporator, helped by a dirty cabin filter. The fix is a new filter and an evaporator clean. If water is dripping inside the car, the AC drain is probably blocked and should be cleared.

How long does a compressor replacement take?

Plan for the car to stay in the workshop for the day, sometimes longer if the part has to be ordered. When a compressor has failed internally, the system is also flushed and the receiver drier replaced, which adds time but protects the new compressor.
