What to know

The Chevrolet Sonora and its 12V battery

On older Chevrolet Sonora model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Older trucks and most small cars use a conventional flooded battery. Recent models with automatic stop-start, including newer Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado and Malibu versions, are built for AGM. GM charging systems deliberately vary the voltage to save fuel, so a reading that moves up and down on the dash gauge is normal on its own. The Corvette and Camaro keep the battery away from the engine and should stay on a sealed type.

Most models have the battery in the engine bay. The exceptions matter: the Camaro from 2010 on carries it in the boot, several Traverse years have it under the cabin floor behind the front passenger seat, and the Corvette position changes by generation. Those cars have jump-start points under the bonnet. Coding is not normally required. Cars with a battery sensor relearn the new battery over a few drive cycles, and stop-start returns once charge is established.

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your Chevrolet Sonora (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a Chevrolet Sonora?

It depends on the model year and engine. Flooded on older and smaller cars, AGM on stop-start models. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a Chevrolet Sonora?

For Chevrolet in general: Engine bay on most models. Boot on Camaro, cabin floor on several Traverse years. The exact position on your Chevrolet Sonora can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a Chevrolet Sonora need battery registration after a change?

For Chevrolet: Not normally required. The car relearns over a few drives. If your Chevrolet Sonora needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a Chevrolet Sonora instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
