What to know

The Toyota Highlander and its 12V battery

Later Toyota Highlander model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older Toyota Highlander model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Most of the range (Corolla, Camry, Yaris, Hilux, Land Cruiser, Prado) uses flooded or maintenance-free calcium batteries in Japanese JIS sizes. Models with stop-start need EFB or AGM. Hybrids such as the Prius and Camry Hybrid use a compact 12V auxiliary battery, usually AGM with a vent tube when it sits inside the cabin or boot.

On petrol and diesel Toyotas the battery is under the bonnet with a simple top clamp. On several hybrids the 12V battery is in the boot behind a side trim panel. No battery registration is needed. After the change, one-touch windows and the clock may need resetting, and the idle can take a short drive to settle.

Before we come

What to send for a Toyota Highlander battery

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your Toyota Highlander (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it
  4. What the car is doing: slow crank, clicking, nothing at all, or a warning light
  5. Parking level and bay number if the car is in a basement

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a Toyota Highlander?

It depends on the model year and engine. Flooded or calcium (JIS sizes); EFB or AGM with stop-start; AGM auxiliary on hybrids. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a Toyota Highlander?

For Toyota in general: Under the bonnet on most models; in the boot on several hybrids. The exact position on your Toyota Highlander can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a Toyota Highlander need battery registration after a change?

For Toyota: Not required; window and clock reset only. If your Toyota Highlander needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a Toyota Highlander instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
