The ID models have a 12V battery under the bonnet that runs the control systems, separate from the drive battery. Replace like with like, or move up from EFB to AGM, but do not move down.

On the Golf, Jetta, Polo, Tiguan, T-Roc, Teramont and most Passat versions the battery is in the engine bay on the left, usually inside an insulating jacket or box that should go back on. Earlier Touareg generations have it under a front seat, which takes longer. After fitting, the battery is adapted with a diagnostic tool so the battery monitoring starts fresh. One-touch windows and the steering angle light sometimes need a short reset afterwards.
