The BYD Flyer and its 12V battery

On older BYD Flyer model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Many current BYD models (Atto 3, Seal, Han, Song Plus, Sealion 7 and others) use a compact 12V lithium iron phosphate battery made by BYD, with its own protection electronics. It is not a like-for-like swap with a lead-acid battery: the size, mounting and charging strategy are different. Older petrol BYDs and some earlier models use an ordinary lead-acid battery. We identify which one your car has before quoting any job.

The 12V battery is usually under the bonnet beneath a plastic cover, though position differs between models. A flat 12V battery can often be boosted from an external supply so the car wakes and its DC-DC converter takes over charging. If a lithium 12V battery has failed, the correct part comes through BYD and is normally fitted by the dealer. Lead-acid equipped BYDs can be replaced on site like any other car, with no registration.
