How BYD cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

Many current BYD models (Atto 3, Seal, Han, Song Plus, Sealion 7 and others) use a compact 12V lithium iron phosphate battery made by BYD, with its own protection electronics. It is not a like-for-like swap with a lead-acid battery: the size, mounting and charging strategy are different. Older petrol BYDs and some earlier models use an ordinary lead-acid battery. We identify which one your car has before quoting any job.

Fitting and registration

The 12V battery is usually under the bonnet beneath a plastic cover, though position differs between models. A flat 12V battery can often be boosted from an external supply so the car wakes and its DC-DC converter takes over charging. If a lithium 12V battery has failed, the correct part comes through BYD and is normally fitted by the dealer. Lead-acid equipped BYDs can be replaced on site like any other car, with no registration.

Does a BYD electric car have a normal car battery?

It has a 12V battery, but on many newer models it is a small lithium iron phosphate unit, not a lead-acid one. It powers locks, screens, lights and the relays that connect the main battery. The label under the bonnet shows which type your car has.

My BYD is fully charged but will not start. What is wrong?

The most common cause is a flat 12V battery. Without it the car cannot wake its computers or connect the main battery, so nothing happens when you press start. A technician can test the 12V battery and boost it. If it will not hold charge, the dealer should inspect it.

Can a lead-acid battery replace the 12V lithium battery in a BYD?

We do not recommend it. The lithium unit differs in size, mounting and the charging voltage the car supplies, and it has built-in protection electronics. Fitting a lead-acid battery in its place risks poor charging and warning messages. The correct replacement is the BYD part, fitted by the dealer.

Can a BYD be jump-started?

The 12V system can usually be boosted from an external supply so the car wakes up, using the connection points described in the owner manual. This does not charge the main traction battery. A BYD should not be used to jump-start another car, because its 12V system is not built to supply cranking current.
