The MINI Clubman and its 12V battery

The MINI Clubman has been sold across 20 model years (2007-2026), and its battery changed between generations in size and sometimes in technology. That is why we start with the model year and a photo of the battery label before loading a replacement.

Later MINI Clubman model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older MINI Clubman model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

MINIs with automatic start/stop are built with AGM batteries, and that covers most cars from the second generation onwards. Earlier and simpler versions used a flooded battery. The technology and capacity are stored in the car, so the replacement should match the original. Changing type or capacity needs coding, not just registration.

Position depends on generation. Second and third generation hatch models carry the battery under the bonnet at the back of the engine bay, beneath the scuttle cover. The first generation Cooper S has it in the boot, and so do many newer Clubman and Countryman models. After fitting, the battery is registered with a diagnostic tool so the car resets its charging data. Skipping registration can shorten the life of the new battery.
