What to know

The MINI Cooper and its 12V battery

The MINI Cooper has been sold across 37 model years (1990-2026), and its battery changed between generations in size and sometimes in technology. That is why we start with the model year and a photo of the battery label before loading a replacement.

Later MINI Cooper model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older MINI Cooper model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

MINIs with automatic start/stop are built with AGM batteries, and that covers most cars from the second generation onwards. Earlier and simpler versions used a flooded battery. The technology and capacity are stored in the car, so the replacement should match the original. Changing type or capacity needs coding, not just registration.

Position depends on generation. Second and third generation hatch models carry the battery under the bonnet at the back of the engine bay, beneath the scuttle cover. The first generation Cooper S has it in the boot, and so do many newer Clubman and Countryman models. After fitting, the battery is registered with a diagnostic tool so the car resets its charging data. Skipping registration can shorten the life of the new battery.

Before we come

What to send for a MINI Cooper battery

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your MINI Cooper (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it
  4. What the car is doing: slow crank, clicking, nothing at all, or a warning light
  5. Parking level and bay number if the car is in a basement

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a MINI Cooper?

It depends on the model year and engine. AGM on start/stop cars; flooded on older versions. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a MINI Cooper?

For MINI in general: Rear of the engine bay under the scuttle cover on most hatch models; boot on some Clubman, Countryman and early Cooper S. The exact position on your MINI Cooper can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a MINI Cooper need battery registration after a change?

For MINI: Battery registration with a diagnostic tool; coding if type or capacity changes. If your MINI Cooper needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a MINI Cooper instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
