Later Subaru Legacy B4 model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older Subaru Legacy B4 model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Subaru uses Japanese JIS case sizes with slimmer terminal posts on many models, so a European DIN battery is not a direct fit. Older and simpler models take a conventional flooded or maintenance-free battery. Recent Forester, XV and Outback models with Auto Start Stop are built with an enhanced start-stop battery, and the replacement has to be the same class.

The battery is under the bonnet at the front corner of the engine bay on every Subaru commonly seen here, held by a top clamp bar with two long J-bolts. Access is open and no registration tool is required. After a disconnect, the engine idle can feel uneven for the first few minutes while the ECU relearns, and the driver window one-touch function may need resetting.
