What to know

The Tesla Model 3 and its 12V battery

The Tesla Model 3 covers model years 2017-2026. Even over a short run the battery can differ by engine and trim, so we confirm the year and the battery label before setting off.

The Tesla Model 3 is electric, so this page is about its low-voltage battery, not the traction pack. Lead-acid and AGM units can often be changed on site, while lithium low-voltage batteries usually need the service centre.

Older cars use a conventional 12V lead-acid battery: Model S and Model X before the 2021 refresh, and Model 3 and Model Y built up to roughly late 2021. Later cars moved to a compact lithium-ion low-voltage battery that is a Tesla service part, and Cybertruck runs a 48V low-voltage system. We replace the 12V lead-acid type on site. For the lithium type we test, support the car so it can be opened and moved, and tell you plainly that the unit itself is a Tesla service job.

The battery sits in the front compartment, under the plastic cowl panels near the base of the windscreen. With a flat battery the front boot will not open from the screen, so on Model 3 and Model Y we feed a small external supply to the release wires behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper. The car must be powered down properly before the old battery comes out. No coding is needed on the lead-acid cars, and the screen alert normally clears once the new battery is seen.

Before we come

What to send for a Tesla Model 3 battery

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your Tesla Model 3 (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it
  4. What the car is doing: slow crank, clicking, nothing at all, or a warning light
  5. Parking level and bay number if the car is in a basement

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Questions

Tesla Model 3 battery questions

Short answers to what drivers ask before and during a battery call-out.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a Tesla Model 3?

It depends on the model year and engine. 12V lead-acid on older cars, lithium low-voltage on newer ones, 48V on Cybertruck. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a Tesla Model 3?

For Tesla in general: Front compartment, under the cowl trim near the windscreen. The exact position on your Tesla Model 3 can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a Tesla Model 3 need battery registration after a change?

For Tesla: No coding on lead-acid cars. Lithium low-voltage units are handled by Tesla service. If your Tesla Model 3 needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a Tesla Model 3 instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
