What to know

The Tesla Roadster and its 12V battery

The Tesla Roadster has been sold across 21 model years (2006-2026), and its battery changed between generations in size and sometimes in technology. That is why we start with the model year and a photo of the battery label before loading a replacement.

The Tesla Roadster is electric, so this page is about its low-voltage battery, not the traction pack. Lead-acid and AGM units can often be changed on site, while lithium low-voltage batteries usually need the service centre.

On older Tesla Roadster model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Older cars use a conventional 12V lead-acid battery: Model S and Model X before the 2021 refresh, and Model 3 and Model Y built up to roughly late 2021. Later cars moved to a compact lithium-ion low-voltage battery that is a Tesla service part, and Cybertruck runs a 48V low-voltage system. We replace the 12V lead-acid type on site. For the lithium type we test, support the car so it can be opened and moved, and tell you plainly that the unit itself is a Tesla service job.

The battery sits in the front compartment, under the plastic cowl panels near the base of the windscreen. With a flat battery the front boot will not open from the screen, so on Model 3 and Model Y we feed a small external supply to the release wires behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper. The car must be powered down properly before the old battery comes out. No coding is needed on the lead-acid cars, and the screen alert normally clears once the new battery is seen.

Before we come

What to send for a Tesla Roadster battery

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your Tesla Roadster (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it
  4. What the car is doing: slow crank, clicking, nothing at all, or a warning light
  5. Parking level and bay number if the car is in a basement

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Questions

Tesla Roadster battery questions

Short answers to what drivers ask before and during a battery call-out.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a Tesla Roadster?

It depends on the model year and engine. 12V lead-acid on older cars, lithium low-voltage on newer ones, 48V on Cybertruck. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a Tesla Roadster?

For Tesla in general: Front compartment, under the cowl trim near the windscreen. The exact position on your Tesla Roadster can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a Tesla Roadster need battery registration after a change?

For Tesla: No coding on lead-acid cars. Lithium low-voltage units are handled by Tesla service. If your Tesla Roadster needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a Tesla Roadster instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
