The Jaguar XJS and its 12V battery

On older Jaguar XJS model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Modern Jaguars (XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace, F-Type and later XJ) use AGM main batteries, and many Stop/Start cars add a small auxiliary battery that keeps the electronics stable during restarts. Both age. A Stop/Start fault with a healthy main battery often points to the auxiliary one. Flooded batteries are only correct on older models such as the X-Type and S-Type.

On the XF, XE, XJ, F-Type and F-Pace the battery is in the boot under the floor panel; the E-Pace and I-Pace carry theirs under the bonnet beneath covers. A battery monitoring sensor sits on the negative terminal, so jump leads and chargers go to the body earth point. After replacement the monitoring system should be reset with a diagnostic tool so charging matches the new battery. With a dead battery the electric boot release may not work, and the under-bonnet jump posts are used to wake the car first.
