How Geely cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

The Emgrand and other non-turbo cars generally run a conventional flooded battery. Turbo models with start-stop, such as many Coolray, Tugella and Monjaro versions, call for EFB or AGM. Some Azkarra and Okavango versions are 48V mild hybrids: they still have a normal 12V battery that we can replace, plus a separate 48V lithium unit that belongs in a workshop. Fully electric models carry a 12V auxiliary battery as well.

Fitting and registration

The 12V battery is in the engine bay on the petrol range. Start-stop and mild-hybrid cars use a battery sensor on the negative terminal, so we disconnect in the correct order and refit the sensor as it was. A formal registration is not usually needed, though some newer cars benefit from a battery sensor reset with a scan tool. We do not disconnect or test the 48V unit at the roadside.

Does my Geely need an AGM battery?

Only if it left the factory with one or has start-stop. Many turbo Geely SUVs use EFB or AGM, while the Emgrand and other non-turbo cars use a conventional battery. The safe rule is to replace like with like, based on the label of the battery fitted.

Can you replace the battery on a Geely mild hybrid?

We replace the 12V battery on site, which is the one that causes most no-start calls. The separate 48V lithium unit is not a roadside part. If our test shows the 12V battery and charging are healthy and the hybrid warning remains, the car needs a workshop.

Why did start-stop stop working on my Geely?

The system disables itself when the battery charge is low, when the cabin is still cooling down or when the engine is not warm. In UAE summer the AC demand alone can keep it off. If it never returns on longer drives, have the battery tested.

Is a jump start safe on a Geely with lots of electronics?

Yes, when it is done with the correct connection points and a protected booster. Our technician connects at the battery or the marked terminals, starts the car, then tests the battery and alternator output. A battery that fails the test after a jump start should be replaced.
