How Mazda cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

Cars without i-stop use a conventional flooded battery in a Japanese (JIS) size. Cars with i-stop need a battery built for idle-stop duty, normally EFB in the JIS idle-stop sizes. i-ELOOP versions add a capacitor that stores braking energy and are stricter still about battery type. The CX-60 and CX-90 six-cylinder cars are 48V mild hybrids with a 12V battery alongside. Not every GCC-spec Mazda has i-stop, so we check the car, not the brochure.

Fitting and registration

On most models the battery is in the engine bay, on the left, under a plastic cover with an air intake duct running over it that has to come off first. Older MX-5 generations (NA and NB) carry it in the boot. A current sensor sits on the negative terminal. After a change on i-stop cars the battery management needs a reset or relearn, otherwise the amber i-stop light flashes. On i-ELOOP cars the capacitor system is left alone at the roadside.

Why is the i-stop light flashing on my Mazda?

A flashing amber i-stop light means the system has detected a problem, and battery condition is the most common cause. It also appears when a battery was changed without resetting the battery management. We test the battery first, then carry out the reset if the battery is healthy.

Can I fit a normal battery in a Mazda with i-stop?

It will start the car, but it is the wrong choice. A conventional battery is not built for repeated restarts and deep cycling, so it wears out early and i-stop usually stays disabled. Fit the idle-stop type specified for the car, in the same JIS size.

What is different about an i-ELOOP Mazda?

i-ELOOP stores braking energy in a capacitor and feeds it back to the electrical system. The 12V battery can still be replaced on site, but it must be the specified type and the reset must be done. Faults in the capacitor or its converter need a workshop.

Where is the battery on a Mazda CX-5?

It is in the engine bay on the left side, under a plastic cover. An air intake duct runs across the top and is unclipped first. Access is easy for a technician with the car parked nose-out or with space to open the bonnet fully.
